'50s Margaret Wallen '56 was honored as an Encouraging Person in the Community by the East– wind Center in Gresham. Wallen is a mentor at Hall School and assists with the monthly Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce newsletter. She says her personal goal is to advocate for better educa– tion and nurturing of our youth. Donald Brent '5 7 is a retired educator who does volunteer wo rk for Rotary, Red Cross, and the Elk . In hi spare time, Brent enjoys fishing, hunting, and world travel. Ellery Pierson '57 i manager of standardized testing with the Philadelphia School District's O ffice of Assessment. Lynn Haldeman '58 is the leader of Haldeman' Oom-Pah Band . The band's reperto ire includes Italian, Irish , French, and German-Scandinavian tunes. Haldeman also is a sub– stitute music teacher in the Portland chool district. Lewis Van Winkle '58, M '69 retired in December following 33 years at O regon Health Scien – ces Univer ity. His wife, Susan Jean (Williams) '63 , is a math teacher at Roo evelt High School. Jessie Cox '59, MST '68 i a fund -raising specialist fo r the Camp Fire Boys and G irls in Portland . '60s Clifford Hjelt '6 1 is a retired elementary school teacher. Hjelt taught for 25 years in the G ladstone School District. 22 PSU Magaz ine Hazel Overby Murdock '62 is a retired educaror and owner of Hazel's Hobbies, a craft shop in Portland. Murdock writes that he is grateful Portland State was there when she needed it. Gary Bishop '63 is owner of Bishop's ustam Golf C lubs in Portland. Emil Karl Benz '64, MPA '86 i the water pollution control direc– tor for the city of Beloit, Wis. Leo P. Kahn '64 is president and shareholder of Leo P. Kahn C PA, in Portland . Kahn has been an accountant for 26 year . Larry Large '64 is executive vice pres ident at Reed College in Portland . Large formerly served as vice chance llor for public affairs for the O regon State System of Higher Education. William Jordan '64, MA '68 is a professor of chemistry at Pacific University in Forest G rove. William Hale '65 is president and owner of Hale As ociates Realty, a commercial real estate firm in Portland. Hale says he is "pleased tO see the expanding role PSU is playing in our com– munity academically and athleti – call y. " Meryle Korn '65 released a CD and ca ette of original songs entitled "Past/Presence," private– ly produced in late 1994. Michael Weatherby '65 was elected t0 the city council of Fairview and took offi ce in January. Anne Hall '66, a retired educaror, serves on the Unitarian U niversalist C hurch Boa~d of Directors and on the HI Task Force fo r Washingron ounty. Alfred Pietila '66 is a sport wire editor with the Rocky Mountain News in Aurora, Colo. J. "Jack" Shields '66, M T '7 l has been appointed as ociate dean of Instruction– al Service for Arts, Humanit– ies and ocial Science at C lackamas Community College. Shields formerly was department chair of Communications and Theatre Arts. Elen (Sakshaug) Singh '66, MAT '69 is professor and coor– dinatar of the political science program at Mississippi Valley tate U niversity at Itta Bena, Mi . S ingh co-authored with A rtemy Sagirian the chapter "The Svalbard Archipelago: The Role of Surrogate Negotiarors," in Polar Politics: Creating Interna– cional Environmental Regimes , pub– lished by ornell University Pres in 1993 . Merle Divens '68 is pres ident of Divens Enterprises, a residential construction firm in Vancouver, Wash . Di vens wa an account– ant prior to becoming involved in real estate sales and construc– tion. He writes that he enjoys attending Viking football games and i proud to see that P U is expanding its business programs. William Lenon '68, MA '69 is erving a second term as chair– man of the andy Elementary School Board . Lenon' wife, Georgia '66, is an English teacher at Sandy U nion High School. William McDonald '68, MPA '78 is city administrator for the city of C latskanie. G. Tom Weldon '68 is city manager of Brookings. Weldon prev iously was assistant city manager of Ashland. Terrie Wede '68, MS '7 1, Ph D '76 has been appointed deputy directar of the National lnstitue of Aging (NIA) in Bethesda, Md. Wed e, a 199 1 recipient of the A lumni Assoc iation's Out- standing A lumna Award , was directar of the Brace land Center for Mental Health and Aging at the Institute of Li ving in Hartford , Conn . She was pre– viously on the faculty at Yale Uni versity, serving as d irecror of the Program in Long T erm Care Adm inistration , and on the Department of Medicine faculty at Harvard Medical School, where she was assoc iate director of Harvard' Division on Aging. Carl Wilson '68 is general manager of the Multnomah G reyhound Park in Fairview. John Brush '69 has been r--==-----, promoted t0 vice president of global software ser– vices busines development with KAO Infosystems. KAO is a di kette manufacturer and software duplicaror. Bru h lives in Diablo, Calif. Gail Pendergrass '69 i a clay artist and owner of Gail Pendergrass Pottery. Pendergrass li ves in Portland. Lloyd Pruitt MA '69is an associate broker at O regon Real– ty Company in Portland , where he has been a member of the President's C lub eight out of the past 10 years. Pruitt also is chair– man of the Friends C hurch Pen– sion Investment Committee and <lirectar of the Washingron County Assoc iation of Realtars. Robert Sanders '69 is a super– visor with the O regon Depart– ment of Revenue in Salem. Sander has worked for the agency for l 7 years. '70 John Apostolos is owner of Aposrolo Painting, specializing in new construct ion in Portland. Sherron Bredeen MS has been a counselor at Rex Putnam High hool in Mil wauki e for 21 years.
