Tom Gauntt (BA), former ma nag– ing editor of the St. j ohns Review, a neighborhood newspaper in North Portland , is a new reporter for The Business j ournal in Port– land . He also writes a column called "Small Business Savvy" for the weekly publication. Ruth Turkon (BS, '84 MS) is the new home agent of the Indian Education Program for the Ore– gon City School District, Oregon City, Ore., serving as liaison be– tween Indian students and their families. Christine Turner (MST) is direc– tor of the new master's of art therapy degree curriculum at Marylhu rst College, Marylhurst, Ore. She also works in the child and adolescent treatment center of the Oregon State Hospital in Salem. '83 Lynn Bright (MBA) has been promoted to vice president and director of marketing at The Ore– gon Bank, Portland. Ross Meinhart (BS) has been named zone circulation manager for the Oregonian Publishing Co., Portland, in Clatsop, Til– lamook, Lincoln a nd Washington counties. '84 Yvonne Cornell (BA) has been appointed the new coordinator of the International Trade Field Study in the International Trade Institute, headquartered at PSU. William H . Gray (Ph.D.), a pro– fessor in the department of Rural Sociology and director of Com– munity Service at Washington State University, has just com– pleted a Kellogg Fellowship with Resources for the Future in Wash– ington, D.C. Joan Miller (MA) and her hus– band Bruce Taylor have co- authored a new book called, The Thesis Writers Handbook, A Com– plete One-Source Guide For Writer.s of Research Ftipers. Michael D. Ogan (MUP) has joined the Portland Development Commission as a business recruit– ment specialist. He for merly was a senior planner in economic development with the Washing– ton County Department of Land Use a nd Transportation. Vivian Parker (BS, '86 MUP) and her husband, Chaplain J ohn Parker, recently celebrated the eleventh year of Prison Minis– tries. Chaplain Parker is the organization's fo under and d irec– tor, while Vivian coord inates prison music programs. Laurie Schwartz-Knee (BS) teaches ada ptive aerobic exercises for people with handicaps th rough the Portland Bureau of Parks and Recreation. She trav– eled across the country on a motorized wheelchair to Wash– ington, D.C. in 1981 to dramatize the needs of those being hurt by federal budget cuts. Sister Krista Von Borstel (BS), an art teacher at St. Ma1-y of the Val– ley High School in Beaverton, O re., is teaching industrial arts courses at the Catholic girls' school with tools donated by her wheat ra nchin g famil y. '85 Maryanne Avecilla (BS) has been promoted to Northwest region territory manager with the Gro– cery Products Sales Division of General Mills, Inc. Greg Diloreto (MPA) has been hired as Gresham, Ore.'s new city engineer. He is the former public works director for the cities of ewberg and Sandy, Ore. Marco Frattaroli (BS) and J ohn Straatman ('86 MBA) are co-own– ers of T he Tuscan Bakery, Port– land , makers of the distinctive dark bread found in Tuscany, a region in central Italy. David W. Freece (MA) is the new director of the Cowlitz County Historical Museum in Kelso, Wash . He is the fo rmer director of the Clark County Historical Museum and the U.S. Grant Museum, both located in Van– couver, Wash. Catherine Gavlick (MST) has been named coordinator of Stay Well Services at Providence Mil– waukie Hospital, Milwaukie, Ore. Marilynn Hickam (BA, '86 MPA) has been appointed director of Cou nseling lnten •ention Pro– grams, Inc., which operates Proj– ect Stop. an outpatient alcohol treatment program in southeast Portland . Diane Andrews Lavely ('86 MSW) is the clinical director and John Becker ('80 BS) is chair– man of the board. Holly Warren (BA) has recently been accepted as an apprentice dancer with fu ll scholarship in the Pacific Dance Center Ballet and j azz Company in Pasadena, Cali f. '86 Deborah Ailstock (BA) is the new d irector of school development for the Catholic Archd iocese of Portland . She formerly was man– ager of communications for Omark Industries in Portland. Stephen Bernot (BS) is one of three new salesmen added to the staff of orris & Stevens Realtors, Portland . He will specialize in property management in Port– land's west side. Matthew Buckingham (BA) has joined the T imes Publications, Inc., Beaverton, Ore. as a news– paper reporter, covering county government, regional agencies and citizen participation organi– zations on his beat. Marshall Erb (BS) has j oined United Telephone Co. of the orthwest, Hood River, O re., as a new management intern in the accounting department. Daryl Rusch (BS) has been named product and hardwa re support manager for Compu– Count, a southeast Portland firm . In Memoriam Robert G. Bosomworth ('59 BS) died in his home Nov. 6 of appar– ent heart disease. He was 55. A lifelong resident of the Portland area, he worked for 20 years fo r Weiser Lock Co. Coila P. Criss ('84 BS) died Oct. 26 in a Portland hospital. She was 63. She earned her bachelor's PSU MAGAZINE PAGE 27 degree from PSU with honors. At the time of her death , she was working on a master's degree in gerontology. D. Aileen Hurlbut ('77 BS), a su bstitute teacher in several East Multnomah County school dis– tricts and a former seci-eta1-y at St. Ma1-y's Academy, Portland, died Dec. 8 in her home. She was 62. Remembrances may be contribu– tions to the Eastminster Presby– terian Church Memorial Fund, Portland . Earl M. Nelson ('7 1 BA) died Dec. 6 in a Portland-area nursing home. He was 81. Mr. Nelson was the former long-time operator of the Lincoln Book Shop & Rental Library on the Oregon coast. After he sold the book.store in 1962, he moved to Portland and enrolled at PSU. Later, he began language tutoring in the Portland area. Olson ('63 BS), whooper– ated a berry farm for many years east of Portland, d ied Feb. 6 in her home. She was 70. She returned to school following her husband's death in 1961, first earning her PSU degree and later her master's degree from Reed College, Portland , in 1966. She also taught for several years at Parkrose Junior High School. Nancy L. Owings ('71 BS), a former Portland teacher, d ied Feb. 9 in a Seattle, Wash. hospital after surgery. She was 37. Until a few days before her death , she taught at Evergreen Christian School in Olympia, Wash. Col. Waldon C. Winston ('76 MS), U.S. Army Ret. and a former adviser to the 41 st Infan– try Division and the Oregon National Guard, died Dec. I in La Mesa, Calif. He was 80. Following his service in World War II , he became a recognized expert on whales and whaling. T he family suggests remembrances be con– tributions to the Alzheimer's Dis– ease & Related Disorders Associa– tion.
