Mary H. Cumpston Award for Service to Students Karen Hanson, B.A. KAREN HANSON is the Senior International Admissions Counselor in Enrollment Management. She earned a bachelors degree in Sociology from the University of Oregon, and began working at Portland State University in 1990 where she spent the first half of her PSU career coordinating the health sciences advising program within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and the second half in international admissions. Karen noted that during the first half of her career, her best days were when a student, after spending four or more years taking classes in the incredibly competitive pre-health program and volunteering any spare time in healthcare settings, would tell her they had been accepted into a medical or dental school. In her current role, she has the honor of traveling the world—mostly in the middle east and north Africa—to meet prospective international students and guide them through the often-confusing United States university admission and student visa processes. “If I had to use one word to describe the relationships Karen fosters among her prospective (and eventually current) students, it would be genuine,” says Erin Jensen, PSU Assistant Director of Admissions. “For many students and their families, Karen is more than a resource; she is a friend, a family member. She is, simply put, the reason they are in the U.S., pursuing their dreams, and doing so at PSU.” Butler Award for Library Faculty Service Sarah Beasley, M.L.I.S. SARAH BEASLEY is the Humanities Librarian and Research and Instruction Services Manager at Portland State University Library. Professor Beasley has been on the faculty since 1997, and has served in numerous capacities at the Library including as the liaison librarian to the Graduate School of Education, the English Department, and several other disciplines over the duration of her career. For many years, she was the Information Resources Management Coordinator, and subsequently the Scholarly Communication Coordinator. Professor Beasley holds a Master of Information and Library Science degree from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Oregon State University. A generalist by training and inclination, her work has focused on the intersection of library users’ research needs and the means (physical, virtual, and intellectual) to ensure that the Library’s resources meet them. “Professor Beasley took on leadership roles in major library functional areas such as instruction, collection development, and scholarly communication” noted her nomination committee. “In each of these roles she developed and shared expertise making significant impact not only on library services, but on the faculty’s ability to integrate and teach the use of scholarly materials.” says PSU Associate Professor of English, Maude Hines. 26
