Philanthropic Leadership Award Portland State University Foundation Christina Gildersleeve-Neumann, Ph.D. Claudia Meyer, M.S., 2002 CHRISTINA GILDERSLEEVE-NEUMANN is a Professor and Chair of Speech and Hearing Sciences, and CLAUDIA MEYER is a Clinical Instructor and Clinic Director of the Oregon Scottish Rite Speech and Language Clinic in Speech and Hearing Sciences, both in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. What makes them truly outstanding candidates for this award is that in addition to their many contributions to the department, the university, and their profession, they are also a supreme faculty fundraising team. Their dedication to fundraising for the Speech and Hearing Sciences Department and commitment to developing deep, meaningful relationships with alumni and community members has established a great sense of confidence and sophistication within the department. Professor Gildersleeve Neumann and Instructor Meyer treat donors with the same care and attention provided to each student and client who interacts with the department. Despite all that they juggle as Department Chair and Clinic Director, they are always identifying new ways to cultivate donors and engage them in their work. There are many examples of how their fund raising efforts have directly resulted in transformational support for the department including helping to double the number of scholarships available to Speech and Hearing Sciences students, and spearheading a crowdfunding campaign in 2017 that resulted in $7,000 for department enhancements, a major achievement that engaged 60 individual donors. The relationship Professor Gildersleeve Neumann and Instructor Meyer have cultivated with the Oregon Scottish Rite is probably the best example of their fundraising prowess. What started as an opportunity to collect furniture from the Oregon Scottish Rite after they closed their own speech and language clinics, has blossomed into a transformational partnership. It is because of their hard work and ongoing engagement that PSU is now home to the newly named Oregon Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Speech and Language Clinic. Foundation Faculty Philanthropic Leadership Award is given annually to a faculty member in recognition of their role as a direct partner in obtaining a significant philanthropic gift. 25
