Branford Price Millar Award For Faculty Excellence Scott A. Wells, Ph.D. SCOTT A. WELLS is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His current research focus is environmental fluid mechanics and the development of surface water quality and hydrodynamic modeling tools. He has been involved in approximately 150 water body studies throughout the United States, has written over 100 technical publications, and is a co-developer of the CE- QUAL-W2 model used throughout the world for hydrodynamic and water quality modeling studies. Professor Wells has a Ph.D. from Cornell University in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and graduate and undergraduate degrees from MIT and Tennessee Technological University. He has served Portland State University for 32 years including as Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Portland State University from 2002-2014. “Scott Wells’ scholarship is broad” says former chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Professor Franz Rad. “He is one of few researchers who can confidently walk across science, technology, computer modeling, and humanity. He has a long and distinguished record of scholarship. much of which is in service to the Portland metropolitan region and the State of Oregon.” He received Fulbright scholar awards, one to the Ukraine working on the Dnieper River and the other to Israel working on the Dead Sea, and has been actively involved in studies for local, state and federal government as they work on improving water quality in surface water systems and in understanding the environmental impacts of reservoirs. Professor Wells also has a strong record and as accomplished and effective instructor. “Dr. Wells is widely recognized by our students and faculty colleagues as an excellent teacher” says Professor and former dean of Maseeh College, Renjeng Su. “The success of many PSU civil and environmental engineering alumni today attests to the value of Dr. Wells’ teaching.” The Millar Award is given annually to a faculty member in a tenure-track or tenured appointment who has demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, instruction, university service, and public service, and whose performance in the area of scholarship and research is judged to be exceptional. 23
