More than one thousand students and public service professionals have traveled abroad with Professor Corbett, primarily on intensive seminars combining thematic site visits, homestays with local families, and training in cross-cultural communication. “Jack...has taken students on study abroad trips... for at least three decades” says PSU Professor Leopold Rodriquez. “I know firsthand that his courses abroad consist of cultural exchanges through direct engagement with local organizations and communities. The amount of preparation for the content and logistics of such courses is staggering, and year after year, Jack has stubbornly dedicated his time and energy to provide this opportunity to PSU students.” Today former students staff positions with international organizations in locations such as Singapore and Montreal, work for the State Department in Central Asia and Mexico, and serve as university presidents and provosts. The Hoffmann Award is given annual to a faculty member in recognition of distinguished contributions to the University in the areas of instruction, university service, and scholarship which are done in the spirit of humanism, civility, and collegiality, with particular dedication to students and loyalty to the University. These values were especially cherished by the late George C. Hoffmann, a distinguished dean and professor of history at Portland State University. 22
