Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award for Instruction Travis McFeron, MSCE, 2001 TRAVIS MCFERON is an adjunct instructor in the Civil Engineering Department of the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. Instructor McFeron is a Senior Principal and Vice President at Peterson Structural Engineers, a local Portland structural engineering firm. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and Structural Engineer with professional licenses in 12 States and 2 Canadian Provinces with over 18 years serving as a structural engineering consultant to numerous owners, contractors, architects and engineering firm partners. Instructor McFeron graduated from Portland State University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, and in 2001 with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering focusing on Structural Engineering. He worked as a Graduate Assistant at Portland State University in the Seismic Testing and Applied Research Lab, and after graduation maintained close ties with the Civil Engineering Department. He has been an Adjunct Instructor for the Civil Engineering Department since 2003. As a leading structural engineering expert in Water Reservoir design in the Pacific Northwest Region, Instructor McFeron designed numerous water reservoirs and performed numerous seismic resiliency studies for existing critical infrastructure for current code requirements including the impacts of a potential Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquak. He helped design upgrades and mitigation strategies for existing structures, and brings this knowledge and experience to the classroom. “Mr. McFeron is an exceptional instructor. Having access to teachers currently in practice.. .is an invaluable experience as a student,” said a former student. “His interest in the subject, understanding of the material, and overall knowledge of steel and structural design made for a very interesting and engaging course.” Instructor McFeron noted “Serving as an Adjunct Instructor at Portland State University has provided an opportunity to give back to Portland State, and to share the insights I’ve learned while working as a Structural Engineer in the Industry where I try to balance in-depth technical knowledge gained in an academic environment coupled with practices used in the Engineering Design community.” The Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award for Instruction recognizes and honors the outstanding contributions of Portland State University adjunct faculty and their excellence as instructors. 20
