Commencement-2019

THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS - SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 2019, 1 P. M. Student Speakers 1 p.m. Ceremony Luis Patron Diaz Marwa Al Khamees LUIS PATRON DIAZ, Bachelor of Arts in finance, chose his major after he realized he could learn how money works, its impact on people’s lives and how to manage it. He was a recipient of the Goldie Chan Scholarship and also received financial support from CASA of Oregon and The School of Business Hardship Fund. Luis is one of four children. He is a first-generation college graduate and as a DACA student that migrated from Mexico, he was not eligible to receive government- assisted financial aid to help pay for his education. Luis interned at PSU’s Student Legal Services office. Upon graduation, he will study for his Law School Admissions Test and begin applying to law school. Prior to joining MARWA AL KHAMEES, Bachelor of Arts in management & leadership and human resources management with a minor in Arabic, chose her programs because she has a passion for serving people and working with students. While at PSU she was a recipient of the Diversity Scholarship Program (DSP) that not only provided financial support, but a community of staff and peer mentors that were invested in her success. She credits her peer mentors and the Multicultural Retention Services coordinators for her success in becoming a confident leader. Marwa was born and raised in Iraq until age 14 when she, along with her parents and sister, immigrated to the U.S. the Dean’s Future Leaders Group and having the positive influence of Associate Dean Erica Wagner, he questioned whether earning his degree was possible. Luis wants people to know that we have a bigger purpose in this world, and we should always try to help those around us. He would like to thank Erica Wagner, his mother, and Sarallee and Bill Croft, for helping to support him during his education. As someone new to the U.S. higher education system, Marwa struggled at first to understand the process and jargon associated with college applications. Despite this challenge, she became a PSU student ambassador and new student orientation leader. This summer Marwa will intern at the University of Notre Dame’s Office of Student Development. Then it’s off to start her College Student Services Administration graduate program at Oregon State University, but in her words, “Go Viks Forever!” Marwa would like to thank her family for giving her the opportunity for a better life that allowed her to be at PSU. 12
