Portland State University Portland State University serves as a center of opportunity for more than 27,000 students and a cornerstone for more than 171,000 alumni worldwide. The strength of the University is its world-class faculty, who serve the University and the community through teaching, research, and public service. Research at Portland State has more than doubled in the past decade, achieving new degrees of excellence through investments such as the $24 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) research and training grant that will fund the Enhancing Cross- disciplinary Infrastructure Training at Oregon (EXITO) program. Portland State contributes an annual economic impact of $1.44 billion to the regional economy. Located in Portland, one of the nation’s most livable cities, the University’s innovative approach to education combines academic rigor in the classroom with field-based experiences through internships and classroom projects with community partners. The University’s 50-acre downtown campus exhibits a commitment to sustainability with many Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified buildings, while many of the more than 200 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees incorporate sustainability into the curriculum. PSU’s motto, “Let Knowledge Serve the City,” inspires the teaching and research of an accomplished faculty whose work and students span the globe. HISTORY Portland State University opened in 1946 as the Vanport Extension Center to meet the educational needs of veterans home from World War IL The first campus was a portion of Vanport, a wartime housing project that was destroyed in 1948 when a dike broke along the Columbia River. The campus was moved to north Portland in fall 1948, and in 1949 the Oregon Legislature made “Vanport College” permanent. Three years later the campus moved to its present location along downtown Portland’s South Park Blocks, occupying the former Lincoln High School building. It was then known as the Day Division of the Portland State Extension Center. The Legislature created Portland State College as a four-year, degree-granting institution in 1955. Graduate work was added in 1961, doctoral programs began in 1968, and the institution became Portland State University in 1969. The University has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,410 students in 1946 to become Oregon’s largest urban research university. Our Vision, Mission, and Values OUR VISION Portland State University leads the way to an equitable and sustainable future through academic excellence, urban engagement, and expanding opportunity for all. OUR MISSION • We serve and sustain a vibrant urban region through our creativity, collective knowledge and expertise. • We are dedicated to collaborative learning, innovative research, sustainability and community engagement. • We educate a diverse community of lifelong learners. • Our research and teaching have global impact. OUR VALUES • We promote access, inclusion and equity as pillars of excellence. • We commit to curiosity, collaboration, stewardship and sustainability. • We strive for excellence and innovation that solves problems. • We believe everyone should be treated with integrity and respect. 2
Academic Costume One of the most colorful features of the academic procession is the appearance of graduates, faculty, and guests of the University in full academic costume. The design of the gown, the color of the tassel on the cap, and the pattern, length, and colors of the hood all have long histories and special significance, American universities, unlike those of England and Europe, have adopted a standard code of academic costume. According to the code, the bachelor’s gown worn by Portland State University graduating seniors has straight sleeves and is worn closed. Gold, silver, and green cords are worn by honors graduates. The master’s gown has long, pointed sleeves with the forearm being seen through a slit at the elbow of the sleeves. The doctor’s gown is faced with velvet and has bell-shaped sleeves. Each sleeve carries three bars of velvet. The tassel on the cap indicates by color the college or school conferring the degree. In addition to the cap and gown, candidates for advanced degrees wear the academic hood, the traditional garment signifying high scholarly attainment. The doctoral hood carries the colors of the college or school conferring the degree on the outside and PSU’s colors of green and white on the inside. One legend, which deals with the origin of the cap and gown, reveals that a venerable teacher in ancient Greece promised wealthy parents that their sons would be “appropriately dressed” when presented at a banquet honoring the completion of their academic studies. However, when the young men entered the banquet hall dressed in simple sackcloth robes and carrying mortar boards, the mark of common workmen, a startled cry arose from the audience. “Let me explain,” said the teacher as he raised his hands for silence. “Your sons are dressed in clothing of the mason, for their destiny is to build. Some will build cities, some will build lives—perhaps one of them may even build an empire. But all will be builders on the solid foundation of knowledge.” Bachelor and Master Degrees Liberal Arts and Sciences Arts Sciences Business Administration. GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION - FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 2019 Student Speakers Luis André Ramirez Mandy Grootwassink LUIS ANDRÉ RAMIREZ is graduating with a Master in Education, a degree he chose to help “shape young people into empathetic, global citizens.” Mr. Ramirez’s accolades include receiving the Oregon College Savings Plan Education Celebration Scholarship and the Oregon Teacher Scholars Program Scholarship. Prior to enrolling in the PSU College of Education, Mr. Ramirez volunteered for two years with the Peace Corps in Paraguay, serving rural families, schools, government agencies, and businesses. Currently, he is working as an eighthgrade Spanish immersion teacher, and he plans to teach at a school designated as Title I (a high-poverty school receiving federal support) where he says he can inspire students who look like him and can relate to him. He plans to show them that they can achieve their dreams, just as important people in his life showed him he could achieve his goals. Mr. Ramirez is the child of a Colombian father and Guatemalan mother who came to the United States in the mid-1980’s. They both died when he was still young, but he says that they left him a strong supporter and role model his grandmother. He wants to thank her, his late parents, his uncle, and brothers for believing in him and making his dreams possible. MANDY GROOTWASSINK is graduating with a Master in Science in special education. Ms. Grootwassink has received honors including a federal student grant called Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education. Working in a full-time teaching position while attending graduate school in the PSU College of Education was one of her greatest challenges, but she says that the challenge has brought out the best in her and given her strength. The most memorable experience that Ms. Grootwassink had while at PSU was her master’s project as a counselor at Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp for people with disabilities. She said the accepting, positive atmosphere helped reinforce her decision to focus on special education. She may pursue a doctorate degree in her field in the future, but in the present, she is focused on teaching — and on her artwork. In addition to being a teacher, she is a professional artist, who has done work for Pabst Blue Ribbon and the Portland Trail Blazers. The child of a supportive Midwest family, her parents imbued Ms. Grootwassink with the confidence to achieve, and her grandparents, both farmers, instilled in her the importance of hard work. She wants to thank her family members and teachers for supporting her along the way, especially her partner, Mitchell; and her mom, Julie. 7

He dropped out of high-school in the 11th grade to travel the country, and throughout his 20s among other jobs, worked graveyard shifts at convenience stores in Denver and Portland where he read magazines and newspapers to pass the time. “I started out reading Mad Magazine and ending up at the New Yorker,” Bayer says. “It dawned on me that my purpose in life was to be a storyteller, and to help others tell their stories.” Bayer eventually began working at homeless shelters in Portland at both Janus Youth Program, and at Transition Projects, and would later say that “Working graveyard shifts at convenient stores was my first introduction into social work.” Eventually Bayer took a job at Real Change in Seattle, Washington in 2004 absorbing and learning everything he could about street papers, and in 2006, returned to Street Roots in Portland to take the executive director’s position. “For well over a decade Israel could be found sitting on a street corner comforting someone who had lost a dear friend on the streets and an hour later be sitting in meetings with the Mayor, Commissioners and business leaders,” says PSU Associate Professor of Practice, Lisa Hawash. “There are very few people who can straddle these systems—-both the political and business—and carry the credibility that Israel Bayer holds in this community.” He was a leader in the 2016 Yes for Affordable Homes campaign that created a $258 million dollar housing bond and works tirelessly at the macro/ systemic change level as well as the micro level in a humane and dignified way. Israel has worked with street papers for nearly 20-years and will be publishing a book in the fall of 2020 about homelessness in America. 19

Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award for Scholarship/Research Yoko H. Sakurauchi, Ed.D. 2014 YOKO H. SAKURAUCHI is an Adjunct Senior Instructor in the Department of International ôi Global Studies, specializing in Asian Studies. She teaches “Japan and U.S. Cultures in Contact,” “Nuclear and Renewable Energy in Japan and U.S.,” and “Topics in Asian Thought” focused on Southeast Asia. She also teaches a Capstone course in the Department of University Studies, titled “Japanese and Chinese Language Programs for Youth,” where students volunteer at a local language immersion school as teaching assistants. Instructor Sakurauchi’s teaching career at PSU began in 2000 when she started teaching Japanese language as a teaching assistant while studying intercultural communication in the Master’s program. She came to love teaching and decided to pursue studies in education in the doctorate program in the College of Education, focusing on intercultural education at the postsecondary level. In the summer of 2006, Instructor Sakurauchi took ten PSU undergraduate students to Hokkaido University in Japan where she designed and taught the Japan & U.S. Cultures course that she has been teaching since then. This course is unique in that it is a culturally hybrid class with approximately 75% domestic and 25% international students from Japan. The students have many opportunities to interact with each other both inside and outside the classroom, and exchange multiple cultural experiences and perspectives. Part of the richness of her teaching experience is learning from the diversity of her students’ cultural backgrounds, and working hard to create a safe learning environment for everyone. She does this by encouraging students to discover and explore their own cultural identity, and to view intercultural contexts through multiple lenses. The end goal is to help students acquire knowledge, skills, and awareness in order to live and work effectively in the globalized world. “Professor Sakurauchi created classes that fundamentally changed the way I see the world. Her support and guidance taught me life lessons about how to make friends in spite of traditional barriers related to race, culture, and ability.” says a former student. The Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award for Scholarship/Research recognizes and honors the outstanding scholarship and research contributions of adjunct faculty. 21
