Branford Price Millar Award / r for Faculty Excellence Laurie Powers LAURIE POWERS, associate dean for research at the School of Social Work (SSW) and director of the Regional Research Institute for Human Services, has served Portland State University for seven years. The nomination portfolio for the Millar Award is a testament to her distinguished contributions to the University and the community. Professor Powers is a leader in the expansion of research at PSU and in the development of ways to conduct collaborative research with community partners. Professor Powers and her colleagues are responsible for research that has contributed in important ways to the generation of knowledge in the fields of disability studies and interpersonal violence, and in the development of interventions to meet the needs of youth transitioning out of foster care. Professor Powers’ many research and scholarly activities are characterized by collaboration. She gives voice to people affected by environmental and social challenges . and engages them in developing interventions to better meet their needs. In her time at PSU, Professor Powers has established her reputation as a brilliant, productive, and inspiring member of the University. In addition to her scholarly work. Professor Powers has held many roles within the SSW and in all of them has performed at an exceptional level. As associate dean for research at the SSW and director of the Regional Research Institute for Human Services, Professor Powers has led the research enterprise of the school and built collaborations across PSU and with multiple community partners. She is recognized as a prolific author, one of the most inspiring and innovative instructors in the SSW, and a mentor and guide to many junior faculty and doctoral students. Professor Powers is also greatly appreciated as a person of honesty, integrity, and wisdom who shares her time generously to consult and advise faculty and students alike. The Millar Award is given annually to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, instruction. University service, and public service; and whose performance in the area of scholarship and research is judged to be exceptional—values recognized by the late Branford P. Millar, a distinguished president of the University. 11
