STUDENT SPEAKERS IBRAHIM ABDI GAINELL IRVING Ibrahim Abdi will receive his Bachelorof Arts in international studies with a minor in business. Born and raised in Somalia, his focus has been to help his family, serve his community, and excel in his studies. Mr.Abdi is the youngest of seven siblings and the last to finish college. Coming from civil war-stricken Somalia to the United States, with its radically different culture and values, was a difficult adjustment. However, he overcame the challenges of learning the culture, the educational system, and, most importantly, his own fear of failure. At Portland State University,Mr.Abdi was a member of the Associationof African Students, BlackCultural AffairsBoard, and the Multicultural Center Board. He is in the process of applying for graduate school and plans to study public health and counseling. He hopes to one day make a difference in the lives of those in his community. Gainell Irving's first course at Pordand State University was American Literature, a prerequisite for her English major. The assignments challenged her to think more critically than she ever had before. As Gainell entered into her second term in the University Studies program, she found that the expectation of critical thinking was a constant in Portland State'scurriculum. Transfering to PSUwas an awakening for Ms. Irving. She discovered an affection for feminism and a love for the diversity of the human experience. She shaped a belief system based on what she learned in class, specificallySophomore Inquiry. Ms. Irving became a peer mentor in the University Studies program to help others find their own personal truths. Ms. Irving will pursue a second baccalaureate degree in philosophy this upcoming academic year.Following her studies at PSU,she plans to apply to Lewis & Clark College'senvironmental and natural resources law program.

PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY The story of Portland State University is a story of challenges successfully met, and of fortitude repeatedly shown in the face of daunting obstacles. Established as the Vanport Extension Center in 1946 to meet the educational needs ofGIs coming home from the battlefields of the Second World War, the school found its first home in a former federal housing project in North Portland, and its first director in Stephen E. Epler. But even as those first veterans finished their programs, the need for public higher education in Pordand continued to grow; years of patient effort by legislators Richard Neuberger and Robert Holmes culminated in 1955 with the establishment ofPortland State College—a four-year, degree-granting institution. Its entire campus was the building then called Old Main (now Lincoln Hall); fewer than 3,000 students were enrolled. Today,Portland State'scontinuing growth reflects the University's role as a center for teaching, research, and public service. Its major academic units are the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the College ofUrban and Public Affairs;the Schools of Business Administration, and Fine and Performing Arts; the Graduate Schools of Education and Social Work; and Extended Studies and the Library, with holdings ofmore than one million volumes and 10,000 serial publications. The mission of Portland State University is toenhance the intellectual, social, cultural, and economic qualities of urban life by providing access throughout the life spanto a quality liberal education for undergraduates and an appropriate array of professional and graduate programs especially relevant tometropolitan areas. The University conducts research and community service that support a high-quality educational environment and reflect issues important to threegion. It actively promotes the development aofnetwork of educational institutions to serve the community. In the years since 1946, enrollment has climbed from 220 to more than 23,000, and from a graduating class of 72 students in 1956 to approximately 3,500 students this year. Those students come from the University's29 certificate programs, 55 bachelor's programs, and 49 master's programs in the humanities, the sciences, the social sciences, and the professions; they come as well from doctoral programs in 12 areas: applied psychology, civil engineering, computer science, education, electrical and computer engineering, mathematics education, mathematical sciences, social work and social research, and four interdisciplinarydegrees in which approximately a dozen departments participate,. The University campus has grown to cover 49 acres in Portland's South Park Blocks, where PSU students work with more than 500 full-time faculty In addition, some 25,000 students are served annually through theUniversity'sExtended Studies. This dynamic community seeks constantly to dedicate itself to the fulfillment of our motto, Doctrina Urbi Serviat, LetKnowledge Servethe City. 14
ACADEMIC COSTUME One of the most colorful features of the academic procession is the appearance of graduates, faculty, members of the Oregon University System, and guests of the University in full academic costume. The design of the govm, the color of the tassel on the cap, and the pattern, length, and colors of the hood all have long histories and special significance. American universities, unlike those of England and Europe, have adopted a standard code ofacademic costume. According to the code, the bachelor's gown worn by Portland State University graduating seniors has straight sleeves and is worn closed. Gold and silver cords are worn by honors graduates. The master's gown has long, pointed sleeves with the forearm being seen through a slit at the elbow of the sleeves. The doctor's gown is faced with velvet and has bell-shaped sleeves. Each sleeve carries three bars of velvet. The tassel on the cap indicates by color the college or school conferring the degree. In addition to the cap and gown, candidates for advanced degrees wear the Bachelor and Master Degrees LiberalArts and Sciences Arts Sciences BusinessAdministration Education Engineering Fine and PerformingArts Music SocialWork Urban and Public Affairs Public Health Doctoral Degrees Doctorof Philosophy Doctorof Education Tassel Hood Color White Gold Drab LightBlue Orange Brown Pink Citron PeacockBlue Salmon Pink Tassel Hood Color DarkBlueHood Gold Tassel LightBlueHood Gold Tassel academic hood, the traditional garment signifying high scholarly attainment. The doctoral hood carries the colors of the college or university conferring the degree on the outside and PSU'scolors of green and white on the inside. One legend, whichdeals with the origin of the cap and gown, reveals that a venerable teacher in ancient Greece promised wealthy parents that their sons would be "appropriately dressed" when presented at a banquet honoring the completion of their academic studies. However, when the young men entered the banquet hall dressed in simple sackcloth robes and carrying mortar boards, the mark of common workmen, a startled cry arose from the audience. "Letme explain," said the teacher as he raised his hands for silence. "Yoursons are dressed in clothing of the mason, for their destiny is to build. Some will build cities, some will build lives—perhaps one of them may even build an empire. Butall will be builders on the solid foundation of knowledge." UNIVERSITY SEAL In 1990, the officialseal of Portland State University was redesigned. The front of the circular seal bears the name of the University and a banner stadng the motto Doctrina Urbi Serviat (Let KnowledgeServe the City). Behind the banner appears the pattern of a rose taken from medieval imagery, signifying Portland State University'sunique association with the Rose City. The seal was designed by Professor Robert Kasalin collaboration with Professor Linda Parshall, who originated the rose concept, and ProfessorsRod Diman and John Cooper, who contributed the Latin motto. The name of the University appears in a type style designed specificallyfor the University by calligrapher Elizabeth Anderson. The image captures the vision of the relationship between Portland State University and the community that surrounds and inspires it. Awindow lets in the light, and the rose—symbol of unity and hope—reflects our shared future, illuminated by wisdom and understanding. 15
