She alqo believed that education is critical if one is to grow and developfully as a human being, To.honor her memory and her • commitment to education~the Nancy Ryles Schqlarship Fund has been established at the University to assist women undergraduates who are returning to college. . Ms. Ryles•beganher political career in 1972, when she was elected to the Beaverton School Board. She was·elected to the Oregort Legislature in 197~ and served four and ohe~half yea.ts ih ,the Senate and four years in the House, bec(')ming well known for her work' on • • educational issues. In 198q,Ms. Ryles became the first woman to serve on the Oregon:Public ptil~ty • . •• • Commission. In addition to her duties in the Legislature a:nd on the· • PUC, she was active on several civic • boards: including the G~vernor's • , . Commission on the Status of Women and the OregonAssociation fqr Talented cJ.nd Gifted·Students. She also w:as a member of the Oregon Women's Politka_l Caucµs. For her vision and her work on ·behalf ofOr~gonians, Portland State University today confers upon ' Nahcy Ryles the degree of Bachelor ofArts1 Honoris Causa.
