THE GEORGE AND VIRGINIA HOFFMANN AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE "Throughout his busy career, Professor Waller has maintained a reputation for unfailing civility, patience, and fairness. " The George and Virginia Hoffmann Award was established last year to recognize faculty members who best serve the University in the areas of instruction, scholarship, and service. Frederick Waller, professor of English, is the recipient of the 1984 Hoffmann Award. During his 27 years at Portland State, Dr. Waller has served the University through his scholarship and his administrative skills. His record of service includes 13 years as head of the Department of English. Dr. Waller has also been Associate Dean of Faculties, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, a representative on the InterInstitutional Faculty Senate, and a member and president of the Faculty Senate. Colleagues have praised Dr. Waller's ability to carry out University assignments with unfailing civility, patience, and fairness. His service to Portland State University reflects the confidence and respect held for him by the faculty and administration. BRANFORD PRICE MILLAR AWARD FOR FACULTY EXCELLENCE "Professor Stern has risen to the pinnacle ofacademic excellence in the areas of teaching, research, University service, and community service." 5 Named for the University's second president, the Branford Price Millar Award was established in 1979 to recognize faculty members who demonstrate excellence in instruction, scholarship, University service, and public service. The award is made possible through the William A. and Edith Rockie endowed gift to the Portland State University Foundation. Bruce Stern, professor of business administration, is the recipient of the 1984 Millar Award. In nine years at Portland State, Dr. Stern has earned the respect of his colleagues for his commitment to his profession and for the excellence of scholarship. At the same time his students praise him for the quality of his instruction and his empathy as an adviser. Dr. Stern, a graduate of Portland State, has produced more than 30 major refereed publications and presentations. His has twice served as adviser to the Student Marketing Association and was name Adviser of the Year in the West for his efforts. Dr. Stern has also served on several University committees and holds memberships in a number of professional and honorary organizations, including the American Marketing Association, of which he is a past president.
