Ninth Annual PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS The first Portland State University Distinguished Service Awards were given to Mrs. Henry Ladd Corbett, Sr., and Earle Alton Chiles in 1976. The awards were established by the University to recognize persons who have made "outstanding contributions to society, particularly to the state of Oregon, beyond those which are implied by the individual's LELAND H. JOHNSON "Mr. Johnson rose from bank messenger to bank president . . . his community service is so broad that it constitutes a second career . .. Leland Johnson does not rest with good intentions, but turns them into good works, giving generously ofhis time and talents in return for the trust placed in him, and enriching the community by his presence.
