PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY Today is the 28th spring Commencement since Portland State became a degree-granting institution in 1955. Seventy-two degrees were awarded during the first Commencement exercises; 42,000 degrees have been awarded since. The growth of Portland State has been remarkable. From its beginnings as an extension center in the 1940s, Portland State became a college and then, in 1969, a university. Bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees are available from the University’s college and professional schools. Specialist certificate and preprofessional programs supplement the major fields of study. Several centers and institutes conduct research and provide special services to the community. The faculty, with more than 500 full-time and several hundred part-time members, is distinguished by its commitment to PSU and community affairs. When Portland State formally opened in 1955, fewer than 3,000 students were enrolled. Today the University serves 15,000 students, 4,300 of them enrolled in graduate studies. Most PSU students are Oregonians, but students from 40 other states and 60 foreign countries bring a variety of cultures and viewpoints to campus. The student population also reflects the enrollment of many older students. The average age of PSU students is 27 years, and more than 10 percent are over 35 years old. Many students combine jobs with their education, a combination supported by the University’s flexibility in programs, scheduling, and credit options. Portland State University has eight academic units: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, William W. Paudler, Dean; School of Business Administration, Roger L. Moseley, Interim Dean; School of Education, Donald J. Leu, Dean; School of Engineering and Applied Science, H. Erzurumlu, Dean; School of Health and Physical Education, Jack S. Schendel, Dean; School of Performing Arts, S. John Trudeau, Dean; School of Social Work, Bernard Ross, Dean; and School of Urban and Public Affairs, Nohad Toulan, Dean. COMMENCEMENT BACKDROP Some of the notable people, moments, and landmarks of Portland State University are depicted in the backdrop for this Commencement ceremony. Portrayed are the first president of Portland State, John F. Cramer (top center); a film strip of Michael J. Smith and the champion College Bowl team of 1965; “Farewell to Orpheus,’’ the bronze sculpture by Frederic Littman (lower left); the first master’s graduating class, 1964 (right middle); and many PSU buildings, landscapes, and students. The Commencement backdrop was designed by William G. Garnett and painted by Flatland Scene Co. ACADEMIC COSTUME One of the most colorful features of the academic procession is the appearance of graduates, faculty, members of Oregon State System of Higher Education, and guests of the University in full academic costume. The design of the gown, the color of the tassel on the cap, and the pattern, length, and colors of the hood all have long histories and special significance. American universities, unlike those of England and Europe, have adopted a standard code of academic costume. According to the code, the bachelor’s gown worn by Portland State University graduating seniors has straight sleeves and is worn closed. The master’s gown has long, pointed sleeves with the forearm being seen through a slit at the elbow of the sleeves. The doctor’s gown is faced with velvet and has bell-shaped sleeves. Each sleeve carries three bars of velvet, or chevrons. The doctoral hood carries the colors of the college or university conferring the degree (white and green for Portland State University) and the color for the academic area: White — Arts and Letters Drab — Business Administration Light Blue — Education Orange — Engineering Copper — Economics Brown — Fine Arts Sage Green — Health and Physical Education Pink — Music Dark Blue — Philosophy Peacock Blue — Public Administration Golden Yellow — Science Citron — Social Work Cream — Urban Affairs One legend, which deals with the origin of the cap and gown, reveals that a venerable teacher in ancient Greece promised wealthy parents that their sons would be “appropriately dressed’’ when presented at a banquet honoring the completion of their academic studies. However, when the young men entered the banquet hall dressed in simple sackcloth robes and carrying mortar boards, the mark of common workmen, a startled cry arose from the audience. “Let me explain,” said the teacher as he raised his hands for silence. “Your sons are dressed in clothing of the mason, for their destiny is to build. Some will build cities, some will build lives — perhaps one of them may even build an empire. But all will be builders on the solid foundation of knowledge.” 3
Eighth Annual PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS ROBERT G. CAMERON ”His voice is quiet but heard at all levels of political leadership; he is unhesitating in supporting causes he believes in, however controversial. ” VICTOR G. ATIYEH "Steadfast in his basic beliefs, compassionate in his judgments, consistent in his actions. ” BETTY W. FEVES "Artist, musician, mother, public servant and wife, Betty Feves epitomizes that rare combination of individualism and public spiritedness that lights a beacon to which her contemporaries and the coming generation can repair. ” 4
THE GEORGE AND VIRGINIA HOFFMANN AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE The George and Virginia Hoffmann Award was established this year to recognize faculty members who best serve the University in the areas of instruction, scholarship, and service. The first recipient of the Hoffmann Award is Michael Reardon, professor of history. “He is a superb intellectual spark; he ignites others with the love of learning, and his own flame is burning brightly. ” In his 19 years at Portland State, Dr. Reardon has earned respect for his superb teaching and imaginative leadership of the University Scholars’ Program. Students and colleagues alike praise him for the style, enthusiasm, and scholarship of his lectures. “Reardon brought Western thought to life,” says one former student. “His lectures were like searchbeams, lighting up for an hour the most astonishing scenes.” Under Dr. Reardon the University Scholars’ Program has been singled out as an ideal for undergraduate education by the National Collegiate Honors Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The University and community have benefited greatly from the Visiting Scholars’ Lecture Series, through which Dr. Reardon has attracted to campus such luminaries as Hayden White, Robert Heilbroner, and Stephen Toulmin. Dr. Reardon, 44, has also served as head of the Department of History and has given generously of his time to community and professional organizations. He has served in many capacities with the National Endowment for the Humanities, Oregon Committee for the Humanities, National Honor Societies of Oregon, and Campus Christian Ministry. BRANFORD PRICE MILLAR AWARD FOR FACULTY EXCELLENCE Named for the University’s second president, the Branford Price Millar Award was established in 1979 to recognize faculty members who demonstrate excellence in instruction, scholarship. University service, and public service. Tomas Svoboda, professor of music, is the recipient of the 1983 Millar Award. “As the ideal musician, pianist, teacher, and composer, Tom is a treasure and brings singular credit to the University and to the State. ” Prof. Svoboda has earned the applause of audiences for his compositions and the praise of students for his clear, concise teaching. His music, which ranges from solo compositions to full symphonies, has been heard throughout North America and Europe. A prolific composer. Prof. Svoboda has passed his 100th opus number. The respected Piano Quarterly said of him, “Ever since we got our first look at some of his music, we have been convinced of his marvelous talent.” Students praise Prof. Svoboda for his energy and enthusiasm. “His constant effort is to instill in his students a never-ending desire to discover the wonders of music, to be challenged rather than befuddled by the truly endless and intricate demands of musical knowledge,” a student observed. Prof. Svoboda, 43, came to the United States from Czechoslovakia in 1964. Since joining the Portland State faculty in 1970, he has served on several University committees and has worked closely with the Portland Philharmonic and The Composers Ensemble. Prof. Svoboda serves regularly as an adjudicator for student piano competitions and syllabus examinations. His commissioned compositions include Eugene Overture, Op. 103, composed for the opening of the Eugene Performing Arts Center. 5
