BRANFORD PRICE MILLAR AWARD FOR FACULTY EXCELLENCE Named for the University's second president, the RUDI H. NUSSBAUM Branford Price Millar Award was established in 1979 to recognize faculty members who demonstrate excellence in instruction, scholarship, University service, and public service. For the first time, two faculty members have received the honor in the same year. They are Susan Karant-Nunn and Rudi Nussbaum. Described by her colleagues as "an accomplished lecturer, seminar leader, thesis adviser, and individual tutor,'' Dr. Karant-Nunn, associate professor of history, has been at Portland State since 1970. She is an internationally acclaimed scholar of the Reformation in Germany, and has been invited to present a paper at a conference in Germany marking the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's birth, an important honor for an American scholar. Dr. Karant-Nunn has served on many University committees and has given public lectures to a variety of community groups. Dr. Nussbaum, professor of physics, has been instrumental in making science accessible to nonscience majors as well as compiling noteworthy research and publications records. A faculty member since 1959, his research into microscopic properties of metals has brought speaking invitations from universities around the world, and he has been asked to cooperate in research in Europe during his forthcoming sabbatical leave. Dr. Nussbaum is a member of the Faculty Senate, the Advisory Council, and is immediate past president of the local chapter of the American Association of University Professors. SUSAN CATHERINE KARANT-NUNN He has championed the cause ofmaking science accessible to all students while vigorously pursuing his academic work.
