The school was small then, its campus just one building and its enrollment only 2,800. But those first graduates were much like today’s, a diverse group whose varied backgrounds and interests were their common thread. Portland State has accomplished much since 1956. A major university now, it has nearly 17,000 students and a campus which covers 26 blocks. Those same years also have been a time of accomplishment for the Class of ’56. Its 72 members have had distinguished careers in many professions, including law, education, management, and social work. Recently, some of the 1956 graduates recalled those early days at Portland State. They remembered the “friendly” faculty, the “nice days in the Park Blocks,” the “well-rounded” educations they received. And one made an observation which some day will be echoed by today’s graduates: “The years at PSU are among my most saemorable.” 36
