Clinton St. Quarterly Vol. 10 No. 2 Summer 1988

O UR MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTION: WHAT IS THE CSQ? Clinton St. Quarterly is a non-profit, reader-supported publication with a social conscience and a sense of humor. It’s life-affirming, risk-taking, heartfelt journalism—an independent voice in a world increasingly dominated by corporate-think and intolerant morality. Your contribution is tax-deductible. CSQ has never hesitated to reprint fine work from other sources, though at first we were overly dependent on such material. Yet early on we also sensed a wealth of untapped talent and wisdom was not showing up in mainstream publications, and we set out to find it. CSQ has grown and evolved throughout its ten-year history—and now the worm has turned. CSQ stories by John Callahan, Matt Wuerker, Melissa Laird, Sharon Doubiago and many others are being reprinted in national publications including Utne Reader and Whole Earth Review. W AWARDS! AWARDS!! AWARDS!!! ord has just come our way that the 4th Annual Darrell Bob Houston Award, especially significant because it features a $1,000 cash prize, has been awarded to writer John Bennett for his CSQ feature—” Dead/Dylan: De-Euphemizing the Sixties.” It comes on the heels of last year’s Houston Award for Sharon Doubiago’s “ SON II”— reflections on raising her football player son Danny. Writer Tom Robbins and several of Darrell Bob’s friends created the award to carry on Houston’s intrepid spirit. We’re flattered to have our writers so honored. Since 1980, CSQ has won more than 60 awards from the Society of Professional Journalist’s regional chapter. We’ve won at least two awards in the Illustrating category every year, and multiple awards in the categories Arts & Criticism, Humorous Writing, Environmental Reporting, Investigative Reporting, Editorials, Editorial Cartooning, Design and Business News. I Y MORE THAN JUST A NEWSPAPER ou’ve no doubt heard of or attended our recent events; all exciting, some controversial: • CSQ talks by Abbie Hoffman, Hunter S. Thompson, Daniel Schoor, Graham Chapman, Paul Krassner and R.D. Laing. Kurt Vonnegut Jr. is our next scheduled speaker—October, 1988. • The centennial celebration of Northwest native John Reed’s birth—it drew worldwide attention—Berlin, New York, Havana, Moscow. • “ The Art of the CSQ” show at Portland’s Elizabeth Leach Gallery. A Seattle sequel is in the works. • “ Films of the CSQ Crew” at the NW Film and Video Center. T SUCCESS STORIES hree of CSQ’s long-term contributors have gone national! Sharon Doubiago’s new collection of stories, The Book of Seeing with One’s Own Eyes, is receiving rave reviews— ’’She is a wonderful w r ite r . . .so talented that her words whirl us knowingly through geographies of our hearts and land”—Paul Pintarich, Oregonian. This issue features Doubiago’s “ Raquel” from that collection—one you won’t want to miss! John Callahan has delighted CSQ readers with his daring narrative cartoons (“ The Lighter Side of Being Paralyzed for Life,” “ My Sexual Scrapbook,” “ Nuns,” etc.). John is currently making final revisions on his autobiography for New York publisher Arbor House, which is why there’s no Callahan in this issue. CSQ has just published a 2X3 foot, art-quality poster of Callahan’s “ I Think I Was An Alcoholic,” available directly from us. See offer below. Jim Blashfield, former CSQ art director/designer/co-editor, has been a frequent contributor of unique covers and humor pieces. He’s experienced great success as a producer of music videos for world-class talents including Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, Nu Shooz and most recently Michael Jackson. Look for more Blashfield soon in CSQ. We’re no less proud of all the writers, artists and talented staff members who help pull all the pieces together issue after issue. T WHAT’S NEXT.. .THE SECOND DECADE his explosive issue is a harbinger of things to come. We’ve got big plans in the works and lots of good ideas, good energy and a strong commitment to continue bringing you the most exciting, thought-provoking, artistic publication on the West Coast.
