Clinton St. Quarterly, Vol. 4 No. 2 Summer 1982 (Portland)

tion Gallery evolved out of the Secret Side Show held at the Workshop two years ago. It was supposed to be a collaborative show between a group of New Wave and Punk artists, but participant x.j. elliott reflects that they were perhaps more tuned in to “queer culture’’ as a common denominator than anything else. The response, both negative and positive, was overwhelming. “What happened was that we did that show, we had a month for that show, and when it was over, it was like getting this great shot in the arm and then the comedown. And we said, okay, now what happens? When do we get to show again? It wasn’t just that we decided that we wanted an audience; we realized that there was an audience. ... And we didn’t have anyplace to show.... So, five of us were able to get together and commit ourselves to a very informal kind of a gallery. We decided that it was important enough that the money would come out of our pockets, that we’d find a place that was inexpensive, that we wouldn’t charge admission, we wouldn’t have to charge the artists, that we’d do all of our own promotion." In and out of several spaces since that time, the gallery is going into its second year and is currently located at 1637 SW Alder St. The impact the Workshop has had in this community is undeniable, in giving artists in Portland a place to show and a reason to stay. There are the effects we can document, such as the exposure and support of local and unknown artists, as well as the spinoffs like Poetspace and Friction Gallery. There is also the more subtle and pervasive rippling that happens in a \ community when artists have a rally- } ing point and focus; there is a form-/ ative spirit in the air that thrives on ;;e * people, new ideas, and new solutions. Northwest Artists Workshop feels like a survivor. Northwest Artists Workshop is located at 522 NW 12th Ave. and is open Tuesday through Saturday 12 to 5 p.m. |jg] OH FOR.
