the Soviet musicians- JS: They were wonderful. They played their asses off.We did a little session in Leningrad, just an i nformal afternoon thing. Eight musicians-one guy was maybe the elder statesman, about 40, plays trumpet, fluglehorn, tenor [saxophone], violin. His wife sounds like a Russian Ella Fitzgerald-she sounded great. And there were about five or six guys in his group that came, a 21�yearold alto saxophonist that sounds like a young Phil Woods. He sounded wonderful. And a young guitarist who'd been playing jazz for about two years; he sounded just very, very good.Two piano players, one bass player, a couple of drummers, and they all sounded great. David had heard from Chick Corea that there were some good players there, so we weren't going over there assuming that we were these Western musicians who were going to show anybody anything; I don't have that attitude anyway. You meet talented mus1c1ans everywhere, but especially there it is very difficult to get their records. This young alto player would like to come over here, and if he did, he'd be a smash. He played with both Chick and Gary Burton when they were over there. Chick had sent him his current record; this alto player had some other records I hadn't even heard about, and they were released over here. He was really right on top of the scene. I was very impressed. CSQ: Would you like to return to Russia sometime? JS: Absolutely. Just to see those folks. I would go back as a tourist, but the nice thing about what we did is, we were able to really meet those people. As a tourist, you're shuttled from here to there, just because it's not practical to let people wander around. obviously. But I would love to go back. 1 ·wou!d go back just for expenses if I could play again. We met a few people who knew of a Canadian saxophonist who's come over a few times, playing in smaller cities. I would love to do that; go over there and hang out for a month or two and just play little towns. And get a group of Russian musicians and travel around; I'd love to.
